A Gainsborough school boy has ‘braved the shave’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Joseph Ciancio-Dalby, nine, who is a pupil at Benjamin Adlard Primary School, had his head shaved on the last day before breaking up for the summer holidays.

Children also donated money to wear their own clothes to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Head of School, Sam Coy, said: “Jo is an inspiration and as a school we are all very proud of him and what he has done for others.”

Joseph’s mum, Marisa Dalby, said: “Joseph asked to do this as he sees poorly children on the television and wants to help.

“His grandad, my dad, died from cancer before Joseph was born and this also inspires him.

“It all went really well on the day. It was quite emotional.

“So far weve raised £221 on the donation page and another £98 in a collection tin and I know the school collected £120 on the day from children wearing no uniform and also the teachers all sponsored him.

“I dont know the exact total yet but I think its going to be close to about £450 once its all in.”

To support Joseph and make a donation visit www.bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/joseph-ciancio-dalby.

The money raised will help fund Macmillan nurses, maintain and build new information and support centres and employing benefits advisers and giving one-off grants to people in financial need.

New management for GP as it hits financial difficulties

A GP surgery in Gainsborough is being taken over after its current provider struggles with financial difficulties.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) will take over the management of Pottergate Surgery in Gainsborough, from Monday, August 1 after current provider Universal Health Ltd asked local NHS commissioners to terminate its contract at the end of the month because of financial difficulties.

NHS Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group, the NHS body responsible for commissioning 37 GP practices across Lincoln, Gainsborough and surrounding areas, has worked hard to secure the agreement with LCHS in a short space of time.

Sarah Newton, chief operating officer at NHS Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group, said:

“We understand this may concern some patients but the CCG is absolutely committed to ensuring they can continue to access good-quality and local GP-led health services.

“We have written to every single one of our adult patients affected, informing them of the change in management and now we would really appreciate their feedback.

“We will be looking to make longer-term arrangements for the continued provision of GP services and would like to get people’s thoughts on the type of primary care they want.

“We want to take people’s views into consideration and would therefore encourage them to come and air their views at any of our forthcoming events if they want to.”

Other surgeries also being taken over are Metheringham Surgery in Methingham, Arboretum Surgery and Burton Road Surgery, both in Lincoln.

The CCG is encouraging patients to voice their thoughts by filling in a questionnaire.

Patients have been written to by the CCG and they have until September 9, to return their attached questionnaires.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) will manage the practices at least until December 16.

Patients with any queries are able to contact a member of the Lincolnshire West CCG team by ringing 01522 515380 or by emailing getinvolved@lincolnshirewestccg.nhs.uk.

Sheffield Tramlines weather is like Jamaica, says reggae queen Dawn Penn

Thousands of Tramlines fans basked in the heat today and even reggae queen Dawn Penn described the climate like being back in Jamaica.

Kingston born Penn, aged 64, turned up the heat with a blistering set from a 50-year career which included her signature song and one of the biggest reggae songs of all time, 1969 chart-topper You Don't Love Me (No,no,no).

But before she took to the main stage in Ponderosa Park we caught up with her for a chat and she told how honoured she was to play Tramlines and how the climate reminded her of being in Jamaica.

LISTEN: Hear Dawn Penn's full interview with digital editor Graham walker - CLICK HERE.

Penn said: "I am really pleased to be here because I know Sheffield is a very good area in the UK for music. It's a honour for me and I'm very privileged to be part of this.

"Sheffield reminds me of somewhere out in the country in Jamaica, because we have this type of climate."

Would she be singing her classic No, no, no...

"Yes, yes, yes! Sometimes I wonder if that's the only song they think I have. I have seven albums and one waiting in the wings. I also have a gospel album," she said.

"It's going through hardship, first time relationship. It's about first lost love in your life. It's a smash hit, everybody likes it and I enjoyed listening to other people trying to sing it. But as you know, mine is always top of the tops.

"I am one of the foundation people of reggae music. I'm very spiritual and I have a gift. Reggae is from our culture. People are going through hardships and problems. We put words to it and it becomes a song. We are totally blessed. It's a outdoor music with a vibe to it. Reggae music is something people gravitate to. It beats in your head. My objective is to make people happy.

"There's too much crap going on around in the world and it makes you sad. I'm a spiritual person. I don't watch TV or listen to the radio, I read a newspaper. Once upon a time I would listen to what was happening and then try to write lyrics to it."

Doncaster Rovers Belles: We still believe insists Lipka

Kasia Lipka insists Doncaster Rovers Belles still believe in themselves despite their winless start to the season.

The Belles are back in action on Sunday at title-chasing Chelsea, a fortnight after their 4-0 drubbing by Sunderland which ensured their hunt for a first point of the campaign would go into a sixth game.

And midfielder Lipka says they have taken the lastest mini-break of their stop-start season as a chance to reflect on the situation at the club.

“You can look at the results and think ‘we’ve lost again’ but we now within ourselves that we’re a strong unit on and off the pitch,” she said.

“We’ve got the belief so we just need to build on that and get the results.

“It’s time for reflection and building on the things we’ve been doing behind the scenes, which have been very positive.

“Against Sunderland, it was quite highly-charged in terms of both teams needing the points and it was quite frustrating to come away with the results we did.

“But we’ll build and we’ll come back stronger.”

Sunday’s hosts Chelsea are a point off the top of the table and have played a game more than leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea suffered only their second league defeat of the season on Sunday when they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal, the side that beat them in the Women’s FA Cup final.

Their only other defeat came to leaders Manchester City.

The Belles currently sit four points adrift at the foot of the table but have played two games fewer than next side Reading.

Sheffield indie comeback stars Milburn proved a smash hit with Tramlines fans when they performed a surprise sold out midnight gig at the city's iconic Leadmill.

They hd kept the gig a secret for weeks and announced it just hours before the show on Saturday with a tweet @Milburn, simply saying '@Leadmill - Midnight X,.

And massive crowds queued up for a chance to see the band who inspired the Arctic Monkeys and have been performing to record crowds nationwide since their reunion after an eight year break.

Those who did get in were not disappointed with a hour long set of greatest hits from frontman Joe Carnall - who is also bass player with Reverend and the Makers - and his Milburn bandmates Louis Carnall, Tom Rowley, and Joe Green.

And more is to come.

Joe revealed backstage how the band have been recording new songs for a release later this year and outlined other plans.

He said: "Tramlines happens every year, we're a Sheffield band and we've got ban together this year - so we thought it would be rude not to do something, then this came up and we thought it would be a good laugh.

"Obviously we did four shows at the Sheffield O2 Academy earlier this year but the Leadmill is special to us. It was a big deal for us when we played it as gigs. We just wanted to do something.a bit weir and last minute. We thought we might be overdoing it in Sheffield and we the real test is when you go away from your own city - we sold out Manchester, we're close to selling out London so yes, I think people still want Milburn."

Look out for full interview and more video coming soon.

Speed limit cut confirmed outside Doncaster secondary school

Councillors have welcomed plans to reduce the speed limit outside a secondary school following concerns from the public.

Doncaster Council is planning to reduce the speed limit outside Outwood Academy from 30mph to 20mph.

A letter sent to councillors said: “The council is undertaking a review of speed limits outside schools across the borough.

“The process has determined that Outwood Academy would benefit from a permanent reduction of the existing speed limit covering the access of Tenter Balk Lane.”

Adwick and Carcroft Councillor Rachel Hodson said councillors and the public had been concerned about the current speed limit.

“There’s been two incidents where cars have hit students in the last academic year. In both incidents the students were very lucky.

“Anything that helps improve road safety is welcome.”

One pupil was hit in January just outside the school, which is on the A638 in Adwick. Another was hit in November 2015.

Associate Executive Principal Carolyn Blundell welcomed the plan on Twitter, writing that it was ‘excellent news’.

Deputy Mayor Coun Glyn Jones said: “A four-year programme, that will be completed in early 2017, will see speed reduction measures introduced outside all schools. The measures have been tailored to suit each school in order to improve safety around the entrances to schools. The safety of our children is a top priority.”

Hundreds dig Doncaster’s archaeological history at special event

Over 500 people took a trip back in time as they took part in an archaeology festival at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery.

The event on Saturday saw archaeological students from the University of Sheffield sharing their insights about historical artefacts.

The focus of the event was on items recovered from the Rossington area, where it is hoped a community archaeological project will start next year if Heritage Lottery Fund money can be secured.

Peter Robinson, a senior curator at the museum, said: “We were really busy and it went really well.

“The Rossington area is one of the richest archaeological areas in the borough and the borough of Doncaster is known as the jewel of South Yorkshire’s crown in terms of archaeology.

“It is the largest borough in England and its size means it is very diverse with lots of different types of material from different periods. It is much more agricultural than the rest of South Yorkshire which means a lot more has survived.

“Rossington is really important for the pre-historic and Roman periods. In the Roman period, it was the centre for the big Roman pottery industry and also metalworking.”

He said it is hoped the project will help discover more historic items on undeveloped land that has yet to be excavated. Visitors to the museum filled in a questionnaire as part of efforts to establish whether the project will be supported.

Doncaster Rovers Belles remain winless and botom of FAWSL after going down 4-0 at Chelsea, despite having some strong spells.

An Eniola Aluko double helped Chelsea get back to winning ways with Ji Son Yun and Beth England geting the others.

Doncaster went close in the 54th minute when Carla Humphrey shot straight at goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

Belles manager Emma Coates said she was pleased with her side’s first half display and was focusing on the positives.

“We kept the stats of the first half; it’s the most shots we’ve had on target, which was a positive,” she said.

“They’re last year’s double champions, we’re newly promoted and we’re competing. The good news is we’re competing for longer periods of time, now we’ve got to sustain it for 90 minutes.

Belles (4-4-2): Hobbs; Barker, Roberts, Tierney, Pacheco; Lipka (Cresswell 74), Omarsdottir (Bakowska-Mathews 82), Simpkins, Humphrey (Smith 70), Murray, Sigsworth

Tramlines, the UK’s biggest urban music festival, rolled back into Sheffield at the weekend and proved a smash hit with around 100,000 music lovers.

Fans went Bonkers when Dizzee Rascal, the British rapper and producer, opened the three-day event with a lights and pyrotechnics spectacle on the 17,500-capacity Ponderosa Park main stage.

Four outdoor spaces and 15 official venues transformed the city into one big music festival spanning indie, rock, folk, pop and funk.

With open-air stages, late nightclubs, impromptu street performances and repurposed spaces, even Sheffield Cathedral became the home of rock ‘n’ roll.

The big names continued to dazzle with other main stage performances from funk icon George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, to American indie rockers The Dandy Warhols and dance star Kelis.

As crowds sweltered in the muggy heat, reggae queen Dawn Penn even compared Sheffield’s weather to the climate back in Jamaica.

Other headliners included Jurassic 5, Goldie, Mystery Jets, Gaz Coombes, Field Music and Young Fathers, while Welsh indie stars Catfish and The Bottlemen - celebrating recent chat-topping album The Ride - brought the festival to a close.

Tramlines, in its eighth year, featured over 200 official acts including The Everly Pregnant Brothers, Public Service Broadcasting, The Enemy, Norman Jay MBE and Sheffield’s own Radio 1 DJ Toddla T.

Snooker’s retired champion Steve Davis even cued up his return to the city - not at The Crucible, but to DJ his favourite electro ‘leftfield’ music at the Millennium Gallery.

Milburn, the band that inspired the Arctic Monkeys, celebrated Tramlines and recent sold-out comeback gigs with a surprise midnight concert - another sell out at The Leadmill on Saturday.

The festival was also a platform for local acts, including Doncaster hot shots Bang Bang Romeo, who were main stage supports, multi-talented Sheffield singer songwriter Max Restaino and indie blues band Sundance, who played the free Weston Park stage. The Stars Band, talented musicians with a range of hidden disabilities, at Sheffield O2 Academy.

Festival organiser Kate Hewett said: “Every act pulled out all the stops with unforgettable shows. We are grateful to everyone who partied with us and showed off Sheffield at its best.”

Looking back at Sheffield Oasis sell-out shows

$

Today we look back, not in anger as their Brit Award nominated single, but misty-eyed to when Oasis concert seats were South Yorkshire's hot ticket.

The Star's July 26 1997 front page reported on "stampede" to attend the indie giant's two September city dates.

This day 19 years ago witnessed unprecedented demand as thousands blocked national freephone hotline in quest for 24,000 golden tickets that sold out within four hours.

A total of 300 lines were set up to cope with demand for 156,000 tickets for Britpop pioneer's 13 tour shows.

Mad scramble saw an estimated 600 band followers queue at Sheffield Arena booking office in a bid to see the super group's first home gigs for more than a year with fans allowed up to four apiece from 2,000 allocation.

The line was led by a teen acolyte who camped at the Broughton Lane venue for two days.

Manchester's finest also visited Sheffield to play The Octagon in 1994 and, supporting city stars Pulp, the Arena again in 1995 (our audio link relives the performance's acoustic live debut of Don't Look Back in Anger) before returning to play the 13,500 venue in 2008.

Doncaster RLFC: York City Knights Super 8s clash may still be played

Doncaster RLFC’s League One Super 8s game against York City Knights could still be played despite the Minstermen announcing they had folded on Thursday night.

The Rugby Football League, City of York Council and York City have all put their name to a petition arguing the sport still has a future in the city.

There is talk of a takeover and the RFL have also said they’d be prepared to reschedule the game.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of players and they said that they will carry on in the Super 8s playing as York based playing out of Castleford but I don’t know whether that has been confirmed,” said Dons boss Gary Thornton last night.

“The RFL want to keep the game alive in York and I imagine there will have to be some sort of decision by midweek.

“Playing at Castleford, where I spent three years as U-21 coach wouldn’t be a problem for us; the main concern is when we’d play the game.

“I wouldn’t be happy playing the game in midweek but the only blank weekend we’ve got is the Wembley weekend and some players have arranged things for that weekend as have some staff.

“But I don’t want to benefit from their demise and I want to have to beat them to pick up the points.”

The club took on Hull Under-23s in a friendly on Saturday where Thornton, who is likely to be without both half-backs this weekend, tried out a new partnership.

Prop Matt Nicholson expects to learn the extent of his knee injury today after having a scan yesterday.

Doncaster Rovers: Mathieu Baudry targets mid-August return

Mathieu Baudry could make his Doncaster Rovers debut midway through August if he recovers well from his ankle injury.

The centre half had been expected to be out until the end of next month after undergoing an operation on an Achilles issue.

But boss Darren Ferguson believes the Frenchman could return to fitness in time to face Cambridge United on August 16.

“We could be looking at mid August for Baudry,” Ferguson told The Star.

“But he’s been a few weeks already since the op and it’s six weeks until he’s back playing.

“If all goes well, he could possibly be back for the Cambridge game.

“He was one that we pursued for quite a long time.

“He will be a loss in a sense that you don’t want anyone to miss the start of the season.

“We diagnosed it fairly quickly. It didn’t show up on the medical. When we gave him the scan, it did not show up.

“He’s got this problem which he’s got since he started training with us.

“It’s a bit of bone in his Achilles that his hindering him a bit. It’s niggled away.

“It was a clear ‘get it done and get it out of the way.’”

An earlier than expected return for Baudry would be a welcome boost given the injury crisis currently facing Rovers.

Serious injuries suffered by three players in last week’s friendly with Newcastle United forced the cancellation of Saturday’s scheduled trip to Kidderminster Harriers.

Craig Alcock, Harry Middleton, Joe Wright, Joey McCormick, Paul Keegan and Gary McSheffrey are all currently recovering from injuries.

Rovers will compete in their scheduled friendly at York City tomorrow night.

Doncaster Rovers: Chairman David Blunt defends Darren Ferguson at Meet The Owners

$

It was almost inevitable that the question would be asked.

At the latest edition of Doncaster Rovers’ bi-annual Meet The Owners event last week, surely at some point a supporter would query why Darren Ferguson remains the club’s manager.

After a sequence of 17 games without victory which sent Rovers spiralling towards League Two, there will be certain fans who are unconvinced by Ferguson, even during a particularly positive summer.

And so, 20 minutes into a session of some of the most searching questions the Rovers hierarchy have faced at such an event, the board was asked why they still have confidence in Ferguson.

Chairman David Blunt was quick to grab the microphone to defend Ferguson and back him to lead a Rovers return to League One.

“First of all, Darren didn’t appoint himself to this position, we appointed him,” Blunt said. “It may well be that some comments people have said, but certainly from my personal perspective, I have no doubt that we have the right person to do this job.

“That’s borne out of the facts of when we appointed Darren: 43 per cent of games that he’s managed he’s actually won compared to the 38 out of 138 we have won.

“I appreciate we had that spell last year.

“The ability and the respect he has received not only from the board but also from the players.

“You can go to the training ground and understand the respect the players have for him.

“Again I think it would be fair to say that without the manager, the players we currently have, we wouldn’t be getting.

“We’ve had a disappointing season behind us but I’ve got every belief that we’re going to have a great season this year as well.”

Blunt also moved to assure the gathered supporters that the club’s hierarchy had examined all aspects of the club following relegation in a bid to lay strong foundations for the future.

And he is convinced the club is back on the right track.

“We’re trying to learn our lessons from last year. We’ve done our best I can assure you and we’ve put things in place in an attempt to try to alleviate that ever happening again.

He said: “Equally, we are looking forward and this is a great opportunity for this football club. We have to start looking forward and taking a positive attitude forward. Led by Gavin, Darren and the players and ably supported by the supporters as well.

“There’s a lot to be done but I think hopefully we’re on the right track.”

Numerous decisions came under scrutiny as supporters asked questions of both the past and future at Rovers.

The transfer-listing of popular goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann, Curtis Main’s controversial loan to relegation rivals Oldham Athletic and the collapse of reciprocal ticket offers with both Barnsley and Bradford City were all discussed on the night.

Man ‘tasered’ three times to stop three-day Doncaster rampage

Police had to Taser a man three times before they could arrest him after he went berserk.

Gavin Caddick went on a ‘bizarre’ six-day wrecking spree after his partner had a miscarriage.

He targeted innocent motorists by riding up on his motorbike and smashing their windows.

Terrified drivers were showered with glass and some were injured as 31-year-old Caddick vented his fury.

He also targeted a dog walker and rode at a supermarket worker having hours before escaped police in a high-speed car chase.

Caddick was arrested six days later during a siege at his mother’s house in which he assaulted several officers.

He had to be Tasered three times before he was finally subdued, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

Caddick was jailed for 30 months after he admitted a series of offences.

Prosecutor Zaiban Alam said Caddick wielded a hammer and a spanner to smash car windows in the Dunscroft area of Doncaster.

He was riding a motorbike and targeted a ‘large number of cars’, some of which were stood in traffic or parked up.

“The targets of his ire were not only car owners but passers-by who were caught up in the cross-fire,” said Miss Alam.

He began his crime spree on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 8 last year and within two hours had smashed up several cars.

Six days later he went on another wrecking spree and was seen repeatedly hitting cars in Dunscroft with hammers and other weapons.

Police were called and at 4am on December 14 Caddick was found alongside a van with its windows smashed and the door wide open.

Caddick threatened the officers saying “I’ll kill you” before an incapacitant spray and a baton was used to no avail and Caddick punched an officer before fleeing.

He was eventually tracked down to his mother’s home in Dunscroft where be hegan throwing bottles and a dumbell out of an upstairs window hitting one officer, shouting abuse and making more threats.

The police forced their way in only for him to barricade the top of the stairs.

Caddick grabbed a riot shield from an officer and punched him to the head and helmet giving him a cut lip.

“He was Tasered three times before officers got control of him,” said Miss Alam.

When interviewed he said he thought someone was trying to kill him and his anger was not directed at the police only in self-defence.

Caddick, of Broadway, Dunscroft admitted 21 offences including criminal damage, affray, common assault, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

His barrister John Hillis said he had ‘gone off the rails’ because of his 46-year-old partner’s miscarriage.

He was determined to break the cycle of drink and drugs which had enveloped him.

Caddick was also banned from driving for four years.
